James Bond Island or Koh Tapu means Nail Island in Thai. It lies next to the similarly well-known Khao Ping Kan (sometime spell’ Ping Kan’ or’ Ping Gun’). The whole area around this island is beautiful too, but in high season it can get crowded with tourist boats.
History about James Bond Island
Phang Nga Bay covers an area of 400 sq kilometers is home to some 100 islands, many of which can be found in The Guinness Book of Records for their elegance or freakish shapes. James Bond Island has been a significant attraction since it was featured in the 1974 Bond movie, with its distinctive rocky pinnacle. The island had been a rarely visited tribal area before 1974.
Thankfully, it is guarded by the national park, and as a result, no ships of any kind are permitted to go too close to the island due to its precarious position–wide at the top and fairly small at the edge. James Bond Island’s two best ways to see are from boats or Khao Ping Kan’s small beach.
Khao Ping Kan is another example of how her magic works with Mother Nature. It’s mostly a very high leaning rock inside with some small caves. Reviewing them all out is pretty amazing and enjoyable.
There are stalls and stands on its crowded eastern beach that sell knickknack souvenirs, mostly from shells and forests.
Is James Bond Island worth seeing?
Indeed, it is worth visiting this island as it is one of the most popular sailings and kayaking destinations. Most of the scheduled tours to James Bond Island are paired with a trip to other famous islands and typically include a stop at the quaint Koh Panyee for a seafood lunch–a nearby stilt Muslim fishing village.
While tour companies usually hand out plastic bags to protect your camera, a snap-shut waterproof camera bag is best to bring along.
In case you want more flexibility, you can hire for a good three to four hours a long-tail boat from Surakul Pier in Phang Nga for less than 2,000 baht.

Why do they call it James Bond Island?
After being immortalized by the 1974 James Bond movie, The Man with the Golden Gun, the Island changed its original name to James bond. It became a popular tourist destination after the release of the film. Khao Phing Kan was left with significant litter by popularity and increased tourism.
In 1981, the island had become the most famous part of the newly established National Park of Ao Phang Nga Marine.
How far is it James Bond Island from Phuket?
The island of James Bond is about 25 km north-east of Phuket. Admire stunning rugged cliffs that rise dramatically from the sea. When you canoe through calcareous caves and mangrove forests, paddles kiss the shimmering waters.
The island is 20 meters high, at the bottom 4 meters in diameter, and the top 8 meters. The island is thought to have developed during the Permian period, which is about 250 million years ago, made of calcareous tower karsts.
The region is thought to have been a barrier reef, and the reef ruptured due to tectonic movements, and several of its sections were scattered in the waters. Elements like wind, water currents, waves, and tides gradually eroded the reefs, forming strange forms, one of which was Ko Tapu.
The rock island is 40 meters from the shore of one of Khao Phing Kan’s two main islands.
